Our wedding guests enjoyed the High Rise area because of the location being within easy walking distance to all the activities. From great shopping, to delicious and elegant restaurants, everything was right there.

Originally, we had considered moving from the hustle and bustle of High Rise Hotel area to a romantic Low Rise resort for our honeymoon, since the Eagle beach area is known to be a bit quieter and private. But, then we would have missed out on some of the group activities that our friends and family planned during their stay. Luckily we found the best of both worlds in a cozy little boutique hotel just across the street from Palm Beach and the High Rise Resorts. Read more about our favorite hotel, click here.

Update: Fall 2013

The Ritz-Carlton, Aruba Grand Opening is scheduled for November 2, 2013. Construction is underway, as of this update (Oct. 2013), almost complete and the finishing touches are being made.

The hotel originally was planning to open in late 2012, but political setbacks and legal permits pushed the date to Spring 2014. The main protest was that the building design was too high, and would interfere the wind patters for windsurfing on this part of Palm Beach which is internationally known as an unsurpassed windsurfing location. There was also some speculation that it would also cause problems for nesting turtles. However, it appears that everything has been resolved and the construction crew has been working full swing to make up for lost time. The hotel plans be be open for business in time for the Winter High Season 2013.

This promises to be THE HIGH SCALE, top notch, crème de la crème, luxury resort on Aruba.

On a somewhat different note, it also is the only hotel that seems to have a pet policy. So your pooch (under 20 pounds) is welcome too (for an additional charge).

Palm Beach, Aruba High Rise Hotel Map

As you can see from the full Aruba map, Palm Beach (and the High Rise Hotels that are on it), take up a relatively small part of the island.

The map below shows the location of the hotels along Palm Beach, Aruba. (The red stars are the resorts, and the yellow stars are time share hotels.) The time share resorts are shown on the map for reference, although ownership or membership is required for reservations. Therefore I have not included them in the information section of the page. Time shares are listed on this site separately.

Please note that the Boardwalk and Brickell Bay are not located directly on the beach, but only a short walk away. My husband and I stayed at the Boardwalk, and we found that the walk from our suite to Palm beach took about 4 minutes. (That, by the way, was less time than it took my brothers' to leave their room at the Marriott Surf Club, wait for the elevator, walk across the lobby and navigate through the pool area to get to the beach.)

Update June 2014: My Papiamento and Dutch are not very good... OK, OK, I can't speak or read either of them... but from what I could understand from the local newspapers is that in 2006, Belfonti Capital Partners bought the Wyndham property and it became The Westin. In 2009, Belfonti Capital Partners transferred the shares to the banks, which became the owners of the property. Then, Wachovia Bank took over the shares so when Wells Fargo bought Wachovia Bank, they became the owners of Westin. The Westin closed in February 2014 and hotel will no longer be affiliated with The Westin or Starwood Hotels Brand. (Almost sounds like a bankruptcy, but I am not familiar with the Aruban Business and Banking Laws.) RIU won a bidding contest to purchase the property in 2012, but there were some disagreements about the terms. Eventually these were worked out.

The good news for the Westin employees is that recent changes in the labor laws stipulate that RIU must take over the employees of the Westin, including their accrued benefits. RIU informed the Minister of Tourism that they will be doing some major overhauling to the tune of between 30 to 40 million U.S. dollars.

There is also a rumor that the RIU might be renovating this hotel into an adult only RUI property.
