The current Minister of Tourism, Otmar Oduber, has sought legal action to stop the development. The motions that Parliament members presented in the meeting Saturday, May 22, 2010, included the demanded for Aruba to adhere to the Oslo Agreement on Eco tourism, and introduce within six months, a law on a ten-year moratorium on new hotel, timeshare and condominiums. (The exception could be made for the San Nicolas area-stressing boutique hotels as suggested by Prof. Sam Cole in "Framework for Sustainable Tourism".) June 21 Update: Van der Sloot retracts murder confession..SaysJoran van der Sloot claims he only signed papers admitting killing Stephany Flores because he was intimidated by Peruvian police and had been promised he would be transferred to the Netherlands if he confessed. Peruvian President Alan Garcia has said Van der Sloot will have to be tried in Flores’ death before any extradition request can be considered. In addition to possible involvement in Holloway’s disappearance, for which Van der Sloot has not been charged, he is wanted by the FBI on suspicion of attempting to extort money from the Holloway family. If convicted of killing Flores, he faces from 15 to 35 years in prison in Peru. Although he initially confessed to killing Flores he now has withdrawn that confession claiming everything from coercion to improper legal representation to the absence of a translator. A Peruvian judge has dismissed his appeal to toss out the graphic confession which involved a trip to the murder scene. Camera floats from Aruba to Key WestAfter over six months at sea, a red Nikon waterproofed camera is found washed up on the shore of Key West Florida, by Coast Guard investigator Paul Shultz. Shultz’s investigative instincts kicked in, and, after some major sleuth work, and with the help of the internet and social media, the owner of the camera was identified as Royal Dutch Navy Sergeant Dick de Bruin. The majority of the images where taken around last November (2009). The underwater scuba dive shots were uploaded to an online Scuba Diving forum "ScubaBoard". They were ID’ed as taken in Aruba. A shot of an aircraft confirmed the location, and Shultz narrowed his search to Aruba and Aruba travel websites. An Aruban woman recognized the children in some of the photos and put Shultz in contact with Sergeant de Bruin. The camera is on its way back to the de Bruin family (via FedEx). However the biggest media sensation regarding this "human interest story" is the sea turtle that came across the camera on January 15, 2010, (according to the camera records.) The turtle apparently managed to turn the camera on, recording about 5 minutes of the camera’s journey and brief encounter with the turtle. (Somewhere in the vicinity of Honduras.) Update: 6-15-2010 Aruba to quiz van der Sloot in PeruThe latest update on van der Sloot's capture...Aruban and Peruvian authorities have agreed to "help each other" in the murder investigation of Stephany Flores. Investigators hope the cooperation will lead to new information about the disappearance of Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway in 2005 in Aruba. Van der Sloot is the main suspect in both cases.
